Java Katz - November 2012

While photographing the waterfront on Java Street in Greenpoint a few hours before Hurricane Sandy hit, I came across some cats and people by the names of Joe, Josette and Jessica that were preparing the cats for safety from the storm. The “Java Katz” are a colony of strays that are well taken care of by these Greenpoint residents that refer to themselves as river people. Witnessing the changes of the neighborhood over the years, the river people have established a community on the Java Street pier, recognizing their feline friends as an integral part.
